Where to buy bulk beans?
Anyone know of any national stores that carry beans in 25 lb bags? I have already checked Sams and Costco and neither have them. I want to avoid buying them online because shipping costs are way too high. What do I look for in the yellow pages?
Thanks. |

Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
I searched the online catolog for both Costco and Sams and they didn't get any hits so I assumed they dont have them. Maybe I will call the local sams and see if they actually do stock them, but last time I was there all I saw was canned beans.

Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
I bought my last 25lb bag at sams. They only have a portion of their food goods online. I buy bulk for the food items I use consistently (working food stock) and keep my #10 cans sealed.
BTW> Try the local mormon church for purchases of canned goods. I do it all the time. I am actually going to one of their canning sessions first week of march, over 100 #10 cans of wheat, beans, fruit, pasta, etc is only going to cost me about 350 bucks. If you volunteer for one the canning sessons, you order what you want and the group cans everyone's orders. Everything goes in #10 cans with oxygen absorbers or mylar pouches. You can also buy bulk items such as wheat, flour, beans, powdered milk, etc from them at discount prices. This is THE most effective way to get a store of LONG term food storage, they have mostly items that are good for 30 years. If you're not a member of Sams Club, you can print out a free 1 day trial membership good through the end of January here:

Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
We don't save much, and have fewer varieties available buying big bags of beans. Sometimes we order via the co-op, but just regular grocery store small bags are not marked up like processed food.
We want more options than pintos. Black eyed peas and lentils cook faster, and we just like variety. |
Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
COSTCO here 25lbs $16.89
That is not great but you better get to looking around. Even oatmeal has gone up and I am nearly out. |

Mexican Mercados. Great prices and varieties of staples. Oh, someone already said that...

Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
I didn't see any at my local Sam's club last time I checked for them (a week ago). Could just be that I didn't know which aisle they were in.

Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
There is a good comparison. We are paying 79 cents for most of the 1 pound bags. .79 x 25 = 19.75. And so many varieties. Limas, large and small, several whites, pink, red, kidney, black eyes, 2 kinds of lentils, black, garbanzo, split peas.
Our current pot is an heirloom relative of the pinto called cranberry... good too. And it wasn't marked up for being heirloom which surprised me. |
Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
Do you have a choice among black, red, and pinto in these large bags, or is it pinto only?
I prefer red, with black a close second. |
Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
I have seen pinto in 25 and 50 lbs
black in 25 lbs and kidney or red in 10 lbs bags others in 4.5 that info that pintos are somehow deficient was percolating on this forum for a while by someone. LS if the memory serves me right. I read later it was a previous error in nutritional analysis. they are not going to starve you, but they are not tasty either. mix with something else another thing. the idea that rice and beans = complete protein only when eaten at the same time has been shown to be not accurate. you can substitute deficient amino acids from a variety of foods and there is a about a day of leeway for you to add other nutrients then again if you go to your average co-op they have them by weight and will knock the price down if you ask for a large amount. |

My grandfather always wanted beans on the table at dinner. My grandmother would spend hours making a multi-course meal with a nicely set table and my grandfather would look it over and ask 'where're the beans'...all it had to be was a little serving of leftovers...but it had to be there. People who do hard work know the energy value of beans. |

Re: Where to buy bulk beans?
I buy 20# of pinto beans for $10.30ish at Walmart. 20# of pintos and 20# of white rice for $20. No Sam's or Costco near me.
